Cosmetic Acupuncture with Helen Morish at Optimum Health Essentials
Cosmetic acupuncture is a natural anti-ageing treatment for the face and body, dating back thousands of years to the Ming Dynasty in China, and an effective alternative to standard cosmetic procedures.
The treatment is done in conjunction with five-element acupuncture which places the emphasis on your constitution. The face is a representation of the health of the organs according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. Acupuncture is more than just a beauty treatment – it improves your overall wellbeing. Long-lasting results for a glowing and radiant appearance begin with a healthy mind and body, starting from the inside and radiating outward.
How does it work?
Cosmetic acupuncture incorporates traditional acupuncture, along with facial gua sha, plum blossom needling and facial cupping (using specialised facial cups). Facial gua sha uses slow, hypnotic strokes to move lymph and increase blood flow, helping the body to clear toxins and improve the function of the immune system. By stimulating the subdermal fascia, facial gua sha activates and promotes tissue healing and helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles. A course of treatment involves using all these techniques which build upon each other to achieve effective results.
By inserting very fine, hair-like needles into the face, neck, hands and legs along meridians of energy, many of which either begin or end on the face, the body’s Qi is strengthened to achieve harmony and balance which is reflected in the complexion.
When these fine acupuncture needles are inserted, they create a small micro-trauma to the skin epidermis, initiating the body’s healing response which triggers collagen and elastin production. When the body lays down collagen around the wrinkles, it gives the effect of filling them in. This process continues to occur long after the needles have been removed and builds the skin’s elasticity resulting in a more youthful appearance.
What are the benefits?
Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to improve health and wellbeing with scientific research to back it up. Specifically, cosmetic acupuncture has been shown to:
- Increase facial elasticity
- Improve muscle tone
- Increase collagen production
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Smooth out deeper wrinkles
- Tone facial and neck muscles
- Strengthen and firm the skin’s tone, tighten pores, improve texture, complexion and lustre
- Improve sagging skin and jowls, neck or double chins
- Reduce puffiness and dark circles around the eyes
- Relax the facial muscles and tension which cause frown and smile lines, and forehead wrinkles
- Increase local circulation of blood and lymph to the face improving moisture content
- Improve the effects of Bell’s Palsy and/or nerve damage from stroke or other related diseases
How many sessions do you need and how long does it last?
A course of treatment is generally done over 2 x 6 week blocks, as the face and body need this time to repair and regenerate while laying down collagen. After 12 sessions, you should be able to maintain results with a treatment once a month to prolong the results over time.
Each patient will require a different approach depending on their lifestyle, age and constitution, and we will discuss a treatment plan tailored for you at the initial consultation.
How long do you need to wait if you have had other cosmetic skin procedures?
It is recommended that patients who have received the following treatments must wait a period of time before having cosmetic acupuncture treatment:
- Anti-wrinkle injections – 2 weeks
- Laser resurfacing – at least 3 weeks
- Microdermabrasion – at least 1 week
