OHE supports New York Marathon runner Lorien Scott and beyondblue.

My name is Lorien Scott and I’ve been a long time client of Matthew Bourke. I’ve given myself a goal to raise money for beyondblue whilst at the same time challenging myself to compete in one of the world’s most iconic events by running the New York Marathon!

I’ve chosen to support beyondblue due to my own battles with depression and anxiety over the years. I’ve chosen the New York Marathon because watching it live in 2014 helped solidify in my mind that I needed to do something about my physical health as well.

Nearly 3 years ago I travelled to New York with my family to celebrate my 40th birthday. I had neglected my heath for a while and I wasn’t happy with where I was both physically and mentally. I have battled with both depression and anxiety over the years, and I could tell I was getting myself into a bad place once again. Coincidentally, the NY Marathon was on during our stay, at the time I thought it would be great to go back and try running the marathon, but that seemed so unrealistic at the time.

Upon returning to Australia, I started to feel my health deteriorate further, with lots of aches and pains in my joints. Just as I was trying to decide how to tackle my ongoing issues, Matt and the team at Optimum Health launched their Weight Loss Program. It was just what I needed, and exactly at the right time!

In the 3 months that I was on the program, I went from 97kgs to 83kgs, plus my aches and pains disappeared! After achieving the weight loss, I knew I needed to do something to keep me motivated and on track. I took up running. In the past 2 years I have consistently kept my around 77kgs, and have gained a love for running!

All up, since working with Matt, I’ve managed to lose 20kgs, and have better knowledge on how to maintain my weight. In this short time, I never would have imagined that I’d even consider trying to run a marathon, let alone excited and motivated by it! Matt has also helped me beyond measure with my mental health, and kept my anxiety at bay.

I’m hoping that my fundraising will help the over 1 million Australian adults who have depression and 2 million are experiencing anxiety. On average, almost 8 people take their lives every day in Australia. So for me, this is to help gain control over both my physical and mental health, while raising money and awareness to help others with theirs!

The fundraising has two main components – the bulk goes to beyondblue, plus there is a portion that pays for my Marathon package expenses, which includes guaranteed entry in the race. For the trip to go ahead, I have to reach the minimum mark of $10,000.

Matt has kindly donated a Weight Loss Program, so that I can fundraise via a raffle. You can buy the tickets by calling 02 9999 1680 or via https://chuffed.org/project/beyondbluenymarathon. Also, all donations received online will also receive entries into the raffle.

Thank you for your time and consideration in my endeavors, Lorien Scott
