Eczema

Atopic dermatitis (commonly known as eczema) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. Commonly appearing in early childhood it can often progress into adulthood and can go through stages of flare up where patches of skin become red, scaly and itchy.Unfortunately there is no single factor that is implicated in the cause of eczema. Rather a combination of factors.

The top 5 causes are:

1) Impaired Digestive system:
An impaired digestive system is usually indicates the bowel lining has become inflamed. This can be from an imbalance of good and bad bacteria, or any infections in the gut such as parasites, candida or viruses.

2) Impaired Elimination of toxins:
Elimination of metabolic waste and toxins from the body is vital for the body to function. The bowel, liver, kidneys and skin constitute the major routes for elimination, particularly when the liver becomes sluggish by too much toxicity the skin has to be the agent where the toxins get released. So often this results in eczema.

5) Genetics:
Often there is a familial history of eczema. So genetics can definitely play a part. What we regularly see is that families can have sensitivities to different foods or chemicals, or one child may suffer eczema and another asthma.

3) Sensitivities to food, environmental or chemicals:
Food– A person can be sensitive to different foods causing an eczema flare up. These include milk, wheat, eggs, soy and food additives/colours.

Chemicals– Chemicals in household and skin products can often be the cause of skin problems. i.e. the sulphates in shampoos and conditioners or the chemicals in washing powders.

Environmental– Factors such as grasses, dust and pollens can affect the skin.
4) Stress:
Stress can be an underlying factor in many people suffering eczema. People with eczema often note an increase in sensitivity of their symptoms associated with physical and emotional stress.
At OHE we have a fantastic technique that helps reset the immune and nervous system so it doesn’t react as greatly when coming in contact with a particular food, chemical or something from the environment that is unavoidable. We also offer a Neuro-emotional Stress technique to help improve the stress in the body.
